New Hire Spotlight: Nick Barkman, VP of Business Development

Team frank

The frank Agency is excited to welcome Nick Barkman to its ranks as a new Vice President of Business Development. To help us get to know Nick better, we asked him a few questions about himself.

Any unique-but-silly talents? I can spin a basketball on my finger for as long as anyone might need that done. I have also been told I have a seemingly endless mental database for pop culture of the 1970s and 80s.

Any embarrassing or unusual interests? The only thing I have ever given myself license to intensely nerd out about is the Game of Thrones series. If you ever have 5 free hours, let me give you my end-game fan fic.

Desert Island Top Five: If you were stuck on an island, what are the top five movies or books would you want to bring? First, I’d never take a book. I’m self-aware enough to know I would likely burn all five of them for some dumb reason like I just wasn’t sure if the one corner of the bird I somehow trapped wasn’t cooked all the way through and then be left with nothing. Five movies I would take (do not judge me):

  • Dr. Strangelove
  • Million Dollar Baby – when he tells her what Macushla means I cry like the main character in a Lifetime movie
  • Super Troopers
  • The Jerk
  • Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels

Who’s your celebrity look-alike – or who do people say you look like? Like Matt Lauer if he had given up on his dreams.

If you won the lottery, what would you do with the winnings? Get a giant Scrooge McDuck vault, convert all the winnings to gold coins and swim in it wearing a 1920s-style onesie bathing suit. Daily.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? How did that pan out for you? Starting first baseman for the Yankees. I have been to a Yankees game and once yelled at Mark Teixeira.

How did you choose (or end up in) the career you currently have? I went to college thinking I’d be Woodward and Bernstein. I quickly realized journalism was boring as all hell but writing to influence behavior was a close to god-like power as I was ever to get so I switched to advertising and never looked back.

What initially drew you to The frank Agency? I really liked what I heard from Tony, Susan and Sarah and that, despite being a 30+ year old agency, there was this feeling that it’s a start-up, full of opportunity for new and exciting ventures. That and, seriously, how incredibly nice Marva was to me when I came in to interview.

What was your first impression of The frank Agency? Everyone has been uncommonly considerate and helpful and I’m very excited and thankful to be part of this culture and organization!
