This Twitter character limit update is currently being tested by a small group of users and not yet available to everyone. Twitter’s goal is to roll this out to all languages impacted by the current character count limitations. This would include all languages except Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.
So, what does this mean for Twitter platform users and marketers? A point can be made that this will allow users and marketers alike to voice their full thought or desired message. Often times a tweet requires us to leave out information that may be seen as valuable, but doesn’t make the cut. Others may argue that this 140 character count limit is what gives Twitter their unique edge from other social platforms. According to Twitter, “In all markets, when people don’t have to cram their thoughts into 140 characters and actually have some to spare, we see more people tweeting,” the company says.
Most marketers could probably agree that creating tweets to fit within the existing character limit can sometimes results in unique and creative sentence structures.
Along with testing new character counts, Twitter is also updating the screen where you compose your tweet. You are probably used to seeing the countdown of characters until you near the end. Twitter is looking to update this feature to showcase a circle that will fill in as you approach the limit. You won’t know how many characters you have left until only 20 remain.
If Twitter decides to move forward with a broader roll out, it will be interesting to see how these updates will impact user experience and platform usage overall. Only time will tell.
