What Is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode is a full conversational search interface that sits within Google Search as a separate tab. Where AI Overviews appear automatically above traditional results, AI Mode is an opt-in experience the user actively chooses because they have a complex question requiring multi-turn dialogue.

AI Mode reached 75 million users by December 2025 (Alphabet Q4 2025 earnings). It is built on a custom version of Gemini optimized for multi-step reasoning and conversational coherence. In AI Mode, the traditional list of ranked results disappears. In its place is a conversational interface where the system synthesizes an answer, the user asks follow-up questions, and the dialogue continues across multiple exchanges.

The typical AI Mode user has a complex, research-oriented query. Where AI Overviews handle “what is X?” AI Mode handles “I’m evaluating X, Y, and Z for my specific situation — help me work through this decision.” The brands cited in AI Mode sessions are those whose content contributes meaningfully to that research process, which requires depth, breadth of topic coverage, and the ability to address specific sub-questions that emerge as a research dialogue develops.

The Fan-Out Query Technique

Fan-out is the defining technical characteristic of AI Mode. When a user asks a complex question, the system decomposes it into a series of related sub-queries, retrieves the best available content for each sub-query independently, and synthesizes all of those retrieved sources into a unified response.

Google’s own documentation describes AI Mode issuing ten or more sub-queries simultaneously for a single complex user question, reviewing content from 190 or more individual sources in the process. Search Engine Land reported in December 2025 that content ranking well for fan-out sub-queries boosts overall citation odds by 161% compared to only targeting the parent query directly.

Consider a concrete example. A user asks: “What project management software should I use for a remote software development team of twelve people?” AI Mode deconstructs this into sub-queries including project management software for software development teams; PM tools for remote teams; PM software for small teams under twenty people; comparing Jira, Asana, and Linear for development teams; pricing for small teams.

A page that ranks for “project management software for software development teams” can appear in the AI Mode response to the parent question even if it has never mentioned “remote teams” or “twelve people.” The strategic implication: topical cluster depth beats head-term targeting in AI Mode. A brand with comprehensive content on every angle of a topic will consistently appear in AI Mode responses about that topic, even without explicitly targeting the parent question in any individual piece.

AI Mode and Local Search

Local Falcon’s 2025 research produced one of the most practically significant AISO findings for local businesses: in AI Mode local results, physical proximity to the searcher carries significantly less weight than it does in traditional local pack rankings. Content authority, the depth and relevance of the business’s online content about its service category and local area, carries substantially more relative weight.

A dental practice ten miles from the searcher that has published comprehensive content about dental procedures, common patient questions, and what to expect from various treatments will frequently appear in AI Mode local results over a dental practice one mile away with a thin website. For local businesses, content investment directly influences local AI Mode visibility in a way that traditional local SEO (citation building, proximity signals) does not.

How tTo Optimize for Google AI Mode

  1. Map your fan-out sub-topics before creating any content. For each core topic, use AlsoAsked, AnswerThePublic, or Google’s People Also Ask to identify the full range of sub-questions users have. Each sub-question is an AI Mode content target.
  2. Build complete topical clusters, not isolated articles. A hub page covering the topic overview, supported by four to six sub-topic pages each covering one specific aspect in depth, with contextual internal links, sends architecture signals to AI Mode that your domain is the authoritative reference on the topic.
  3. Optimize for semantic relevance, not keyword repetition. AI Mode uses semantic understanding. Write for topic completeness: definitions, context, how-to guidance, comparisons, edge cases, and related concepts.
  4. Structure every section to directly answer a specific question. Every H2 and H3 should name the specific question it answers. Every opening sentence should answer that question directly. AI Mode retrieves content for each sub-question independently, and your section-level structure determines which sections get used.
  5. Invest in comparison content. Fan-out queries routinely include sub-queries comparing alternatives. Dedicated comparison pages for your category’s major alternatives consistently appear across AI Mode responses about the parent topic.
  6. For local businesses, publish comprehensive category content alongside business information. Your AI Mode local visibility depends more on the depth of your content about your service category and local context than on traditional local SEO signals.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

AI Mode rolled out broadly in the US in 2025 and reached 75 million users by December 2025 (Alphabet Q4 earnings). It is accessed via the AI tab within Google Search. International availability continues to expand into 2026.

They serve fundamentally different user intents. AI Overviews appear for single-turn queries and favor the most authoritative, freshest, most direct answers available. AI Mode serves complex research sessions and constructs answers from sub-queries that often touch different aspects of a topic than the parent query implies. A page optimized to directly answer 'what is X?' is not necessarily the page best suited to answer 'how does X compare to Y in the context of Z?' that emerges in an AI Mode research dialogue.

Comprehensive guides, comparison content (A vs. B), how-to content with clear steps, FAQ sections, and data-backed analysis all perform well. Thin blog posts and purely promotional content consistently underperform because they cannot serve the sustained research dialogue that AI Mode users are engaged in.

Brands investing in topical cluster depth today are building the citation presence that compounds as AI Mode grows from 75 million users to hundreds of millions. The frank Agency designs and builds the content architectures that make this possible.
